Undergraduate Applicants

St. John’s College is administratively independent from the University of Hong Kong and has its own admissions policy.

Who is eligible?

  1. New students receiving a conditional offer of HKU
  2. Exchange students who are nominated to study at HKU for one or two semesters.

Selection criteria are merit-based; whether the applicants and the College share the similar belief and values will be taken into consideration. The candidate's potential, not merely prior attainment, is also crucial.

Step 1: Submit your application

  • For new students, you may submit your application to the College’s portal (OpenApply) when you receive the conditional offer from HKU. Our admission is on a rolling basis, and application is welcome anytime throughout the year.
  • Once you are admitted to HKU, please indicate your choice of residence in HKU portal (CEDARS). Applications which put St. John's as the first choice would be preferably considered.

Step 2: Assessment

  • Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview. If the candidate is not available for an in-person interview, the interview will be conducted through video-conferencing such as Skype.
  • Main round interviews: April to Mid-August

Step 3: Confirm your offer

  • Successful main-round applicants’ results will be announced through email and phone call in mid August. Unsuccessful candidates would also be informed earlier for applying to other halls of residence.
  • Applicants are required to send the proof of payment for the first installment of St. John's accommodation to confirm their offer before the orientation.
  • Residents can expect to stay in the College as residential members for 3 consecutive academic years if they have fulfilled several disciplinary and academic criteria set by the College.
