High Table Dinner with The Honourable Martin Liao - 17 November 2025

It is with immense privilege that we hosted The Honourable Martin Liao Cheung-kong, GBM, SBS, JP, as our distinguished guest speaker at the final High Table Dinner of the semester, themed “Reunion, Commemoration & Remembrance”, to celebrate our 113th anniversary.
Mr. Liao delivered a compelling and insightful address about education, emphasizing his firm belief that education has the power to transform lives and shape the future. His speech resonated deeply with all in attendance, inspiring reflection on the pivotal role education plays in fostering a more inclusive and enlightened society.
We were especially delighted to welcome back over 60 alumni to St. John’s, representing a remarkable span of generations from the 1960s through to the 2020s. Their presence served as a warm reminder of the enduring bonds within our community, and how the support and connections forged here continue to make SJC a truly special and lasting home for all.
To all students, we extend our heartfelt wishes for success in your examinations in December. May your dedication and hard work be rewarded, and may you achieve the best possible results.

High Table Dinner with Dr. Michelle Choy Sun - 10 November 2025

The College was awash with art, warmth, and the remarkable spirit of our St. John's community as we proudly unveiled the "Da VINCI MEETS Da VINCI: Reimagining Da Vinci’s Legacy in the 21st Century" art exhibition, by our esteemed featured artist, Dr. Michelle Choy Sun (our 7F alumnae of 1977).
During the High Table and Art Exhibition, Dr. Choy shared her inspiration behind the remarkable collection of over 20 drawings she presented from the USA for this event. Her passion and commitment deeply resonated with everyone present. We were thrilled to welcome all alumni and special guests to the High Table and the five-day exhibition, where they relished an evening filled with inspiring art and heartfelt conversation.
The art exhibition beautifully combined creativity and purpose, celebrating a legacy that will endure through the “James and Michelle Memorial Scholarship”. We are immensely grateful to Dr. Michelle Choy for her generous donation of a painting in support of this fund.
Our heartfelt thanks also go to the St. John’s College Alumni Association and Mr. Vincent Chiu (Chairman of the SJCAA) for their invaluable support in establishing the Scholarship for students. Last but not the least, a special acknowledgment is due to all our donors — your faith in this vision made it all achievable.

High Table Dinner with Rev Paul Tong - 3 November 2025

We were honoured to welcome Rev. Paul Tong as our guest speaker for an insightful talk titled: "What is College Life?" The topic beautifully brought together 18 alumni who once served as Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Student Association, rekindling cherished memories of their time at St. John's. It was a heartwarming reunion of old brothers and sisters!
Rev. Paul Tong, who served as Master of St. John's College for 30 years (from 1973–1985 and 1990–2008), demonstrated remarkable devotion. His leadership helped us navigate several financial crises, most notably his decision to build the Wong Chik Ting Hall for postgraduates. This not only expanded our community but also secured a steady income stream for many years.
Even now, Rev. Paul Tong continues to care deeply for our students. He hopes that everyone can enjoy their college life to the fullest, making meaningful memories and embracing all the opportunities that come with it. His unwavering support and concern remind us of the strong community we are privileged to be part of.

High Table Dinner with Prof Joseph Chan - 20 October 2025

We were honoured to have Professor Joseph Chan (our 2F alumnus) as our distinguished guest speaker on 20 October. As an Associate Professor of Practice at HKU Business School, Prof Chan delivered an inspiring High Table Talk on “How ESG Relates to Business,” sharing unique industry insights that left us all motivated. (ESG – Environmental, Social, and Governance)
We were also pleased to celebrate the success of the ESG Challenge, culminating in a prize presentation at the end of the evening. Congratulations to our Year 2 Social Sciences student, Aves Madeleine from 10F, who led a team of four to develop an ESG solution called “SwapSpace”. Team members Marco Wong from Diocesan Boys’ School and Charmaine Kwok from West Island School also joined the High Table to receive their awards, while Nicole Chan from UCL is currently in the UK continuing her studies.
We believe that students gained valuable insights through the Challenge and our programmes. The journey towards ESG integration is ongoing, and as Professor Joseph Chan mentioned, St. John’s is the ideal place for us to collaborate from diverse perspectives. Our students are always highly motivated and maintain strong connections to support each other.
Lastly, a special thanks to our judges of the ESG Challenge: Ms. Hilary Pang (7F), Ms. Christie Lai (10F), and Ms. En Yu Yap (7F). They work closely with ESG-related initiatives within our community. We look forward to hosting more ESG events in the future, working together to build a better, more sustainable world for generations to come through the principles of ESG.

High Table Dinner with Dean of Architecture & Alumni - 22 September 2025

We were honored to have Prof. Yung Ho Chang, Dean and Chair Professor of HKU Architecture, as our distinguished guest speaker. Prof. Chang shared his insightful perspectives on the theme: “What is good architecture?” Through his personal experiences, aesthetic vision, and cultural values, he inspired everyone with a deeper understanding of architecture.
A heartfelt moment came when our student representative, 7F Abby Li, presented Prof. Chang with a special gift on behalf of the college: a beautiful piece of Chinese calligraphy. The scroll bears the saying, “ๅคฉๅœฐ็‚บๆฃŸๅฎ‡๏ผŒๅฑ‹ๅฎค็‚บใก“่กฃ”. This phrase, quoted by Prof. Chang when explaining his renowned Vertical Glass House design. These two sentences referenced an ancient Chinese scholar who claimed that he treats the whole space around him as his home, and his home as the clothes he wears. We hope this gift serves as a token of our deep respect for the amazing architectural prototype he created.
We are grateful to have our Architecture alumni who returned to SJC for this High Table. Their professional exchange with current students truly broadened horizons and fostered meaningful connections. We warmly welcome more alumni to come back home and reconnect with the SJC family!
