Our Stories

As a St. Johnians. I’ve gradually managed to find my way and overcome all initial challenges. I was given opportunities to try things that I never did before, such as English Debate, Choir, Library Committee, or SJC Academic Forum.

I’ve witnessed my personal growth in the past one year. It simply amazes me how much a year could change a person.

In the first few weeks after my arrival at St. John’s College (SJC), I honestly felt so overwhelmed by everything. I was the only Vietnamese in SJC. Moving to Hong Kong was the very first time I’ve been abroad on my own and actually the second time I’ve ever travelled overseas. I didn’t feel confident at all to start conversations. I never went to an international school in my entire life. I never had the chance to communicate in English on a daily basis before.

Here in HKU, here in SJC, I found myself surrounded by most multi-talented and overachieving students. I felt insecure. I felt so small.

However, also right here in SJC, I’ve gradually managed to find my way and overcome all initial challenges. I’ve learnt that everyone is talented in their own way, and there is no point comparing myself with others. I was given opportunities to try things that I never did before, such as English Debate, Choir, Library Committee, or SJC Academic Forum. Here in SJC, I've become more confident. I’ve met amazing individuals from all over the world and got inspired by their unique stories. Here in SJC, I've received so much love and care. I've met those who I call true friends - those who waited for me and kept asking “When are you coming back?” whenever I’m out of town, who took care of me when I got sick, who kept reminding me “Don’t be so hard on yourself”, or who sent me a text at 2am saying “You are trying your best, and I just want you to know I’m very proud of you”.

Right here, right here, in St. John’s College.

It would be a lie if I said I didn't struggle at first to adapt to the culture here. It would be a lie if I said my journey in SJC was perfect. Yet, now I can say that I have a home in Hong Kong.

Here in SJC, we embrace diversity. Here in SJC, we strive for the best. Here in SJC, it is not about how good you are. It’s about how good you will become.
