Our Stories

Devoting my time in softball and hockey, I developed strong bonds with my teammates. It took me some time to realize that I’ve grown and matured. Contributing to it in ways that are meaningful to me and valuable to others is my reflection of self-growth.

The idea of give-and-take is what makes us unique

“For as long as I can remember, I've been a man of few words. I would rather listen to someone talk for hours than actually do the talking. It was just really hard for me to step out of my comfort zone. I knew this would confine or leave myself stranded, but I just find it difficult to talk to people I’m not familiar with.

When I first came here, I was bewildered by the seemingly over-achieving people around me. There is always a constant pressure of every freshman to gain acceptance from peers and our seniors. I was also struggling to strike a balance between hall life and academics.

To be frank, I felt like I would never fit in. Then, I am not sure how and when, but somehow things got better.

I started off by trying sports, and it worked. Devoting my time in softball and hockey, I developed strong bonds with my teammates. It took me some time to realize that I’ve grown and matured. Contributing to it in ways that are meaningful to me and valuable to others is my reflection of self-growth. Friends here in St. John’s are good at listening to others. They share their experiences and I share mine. I slowly opened up to my floor brothers and others. I found my confidence in starting conversations with strangers and organising events. These experiences weaved into something special that changed me as a person. For the better. The idea of give-and-take is what makes us unique. As the saying goes -

Your life is not about you. Rather, it’s about those whose lives you’ve touched.
